Humans of Migrant – Saif-2017/03/09-

My name is سيف (Saif). In Arabic it means “sword.” A name is a gift; you have no choice to it, at least for a few years. Till you become an adult, when your friends or peers call your name, you come to know the meaning of it, and associate yourself with it, and then start discovering yourself. Afterwards, you may be realized that the qualities embedded in your name reflect your true personality. So in my case, sharpness and decisiveness formed my personality.

While walking on the road of life, I never looked back, nor questioned myself for the decisions I have made. As soon as I’ve made up my mind to live in Asia, I started learning about the history and culture of China, Taiwan, and the Southeast Asia. Now as you can see, I am here. I have been teaching Arabic in the college for two weeks.

Before coming here, I worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and International Organization for Migration (IOM) as an Arabic interpreter, I helped refugees from the Middle East who fled from their countries without choice. They were forced to leave everything behind, merely to seek safety and security. They didn’t mean to compete nor to “steal” jobs from the locals of their host countries. All they want is to live their life in peace.

Nowadays, misunderstanding of Islam exist around the world. I would say: “Don’t depend solely on the media.” Islam is neither about terrorism nor violence; instead, it’s the religion of peace. Muslims greet everyone by saying “السلام عليكم ” (Peace upon you). Quran promote the diversity and co-existence with everyone, no matter what is your social background, religion, color, or the social class. For those who think Islam is associated with savagery, just go and read about Islam, find the true answer by yourself.

As a migrant, I know it’s difficult to cope with loneliness in an alien country. But I urge migrants to engage themselves and use their time productively. As for me, beside my academic interests, I am currently interested in knowing about Taiwan, how the society works and how people interact with each other.

You have to work very hard to achieve your dreams. Don’t take things for granted because they don’t happen as you want. Set goals, work hard, and reach them!
